Sermon Outline 3.16.25

Title: The War is Waging—but the Victory is Here!
Text: Romans 7:7-25
Theme: The Law is good, but it exposes our sin, revealing the war between the flesh and the spirit. The believer experiences a lifelong battle against sin, but Christ alone delivers us from its power.

I. Introduction: The Battle We Can’t Escape
  • Romans 7 is one of the most debated passages in Scripture. Is Paul talking about his pre-conversion struggle or the battle of a true believer?

II. The Law Reveals Sin, But It Can’t Save (vv. 7-12) – The Law Reflects, Not Rescues
  • The Law is not sinful, but it functions as a mirror—revealing, not removing, sin.
  • The Law is like an X-ray machine—it’ll show you the cancer, but it can’t cure you.
  • The unbeliever is not at war with sin—he is a slave to it (John 8:34).

III. The Law Awakens Sin, Producing Death (vv. 9-13) – Sin Rebels Against Righteousness

IV. The War Within: The Flesh vs. The Spirit (vv. 14-20) – The Believer’s Battle
  • Paul is describing a regenerate believer
  • The unbeliever doesn’t war against sin, he embraces it.

V. Who Will Deliver Me? (vv. 21-25) – Christ Alone is the Solution

VI. Conclusion: The War is Waging—But the Victory is Here!
  • Romans 7 is the most honest confession of a believer’s battle with sin.

  • This chapter is meant to drive you to Rom 8—where the Spirit gives us power over sin
? If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
