Sermon Outline 7.21.24

The Counter-cultural Household & Christian Education

Title: “Household Management: Christian Education = Altering the Trajectory”

Theme: Children & Education—Fathers must provoke their children in the Way.

Texts: Ephesians 6:1-4; Deut 6:1-8; Psalm 127; Psalm 14:1; Proverbs 1:7; 22:6

Brief Outline:
  • The Duty of Fathers (Eph 6:4)—Fathers are charged both negatively and positively.
    1. DON'T provoke children to wrath (discipline without love or love without discipline)
    2. DO nurture them in the "discipline & instruction" of the Lord (discipline tempered w/love)
**When fathers properly administer both love and discipline, by example they show how God raises His own children in the family of God (cf. Hebrews 12:5-11).
  • Why?
  • How? Altering their trajectory…provoking children in the Way by persistently promoting the principle through passing pain.

Biblical Vocabulary:
  • Chastisement (discipline), comes from the Greek word “paideia” which primarily means "to train children," suggesting the broad idea of education.
(a) It is correcting with words, reproving, and admonishing: 1Ti 1:20; 2Ti 2:25
(b) It is "chastening" by managed pain: 1Cr 11:32; 2Cr 6:9; Heb 12:6, 7, 10; Rev 3:19. The
verb also has the meaning "to chastise with blows, to scourge," command of judge (Lk
23:16, 22).
  • Instruction comes from the Greek word "nouthesia" which means admonition or to caution or warn.

Translation: Fathers, do not exasperate your children, but nurture them in the Lord with correction and caution.

Interpretation: Fathers, God has given you the ultimate responsibility of altering your children’s trajectory from living in the kingdom of darkness to being citizens of Christ’s kingdom through the nourishment (nurture) of discipline (Gk: paideia = correction) and instruction (Gk: nouthesia = caution/warnings).

Scripture:
Prov 23:13-15: 13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. 14 If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol. 15 My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad.

Prov 29:17–Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.

Prov 1:7: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Prov 22:6: Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Psalm 127:
1 Unless the Lord builds the house,
    those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
    the watchman stays awake in vain.
2 It is in vain that you rise up early
    and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
    for he gives to his beloved sleep.
3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
    the fruit of the womb a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
    are the children of one's youth.
5 Blessed is the man
    who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
    when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

Deut 6:6-9: 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Ps 78:5-8—He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

Psalm 14:1-3 -
1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
    They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds;
    there is none who does good.
2 The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man,
    to see if there are any who understand,[a]
    who seek after God.
3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
    there is none who does good,
    not even one.

Prov 26:4-5—Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.
