Test Spirits: an altered gospel is a gospel that cannot save
Take notice of false spirits (v1)
- We disregard warnings all the time.
- We hear the word “spirit” and we brush it off as a hobgoblin, halloween, or a fairy tale.
- Defensively (v1a): We need to have an automatic defensive posture of discernment.
- Offensively (v1b): Test the teachers to see if they’re from God.
Test the spirits (vv2-3, 5)
Test of orthodoxy (vv2-3)
- How can I know if a Bible teacher is from God? Listen to what he teaches about Jesus.
- False teachers probably didn’t say Jesus is not the Christ. It was subtle twists.
- Confession: words spoken that connect with the condition of the heart.
- An altered gospel is a gospel that cannot save (Gal 1:9).
- Denying a truth doctrine reveals that the Holy Spirit is not in you.
- A teacher that twists what God says is true shows they do not have the Holy Spirit in them.
- If a pastor is not preaching about Christ and Him crucified, then there’s your first warning flag.
- False prophets will be mainstream because the world listens to them.
- Winsomeness is worldliness light.
True Christians listen to the truth (vv4, 6)
- True Christians listen to the truth, meaning they embrace the truth (v6)
- They don’t listen to the spirit of error because the Spirit in you is greater and overcomes falsehood (v4)
- Jesus overcame sin, death, & hell with His sinless life, substitutionary death, and resurrection.
- He has overcome, as will the true Christian.
